:: basic facts ::
Naoki
Urasawa was born in January 2nd, 1960 in Osaka, Japan. He started drawing
manga when he was in high school, and until he attended college he was part
of a music group as well. He graduated in Economy in Meisei University, and
in 1982 he won the New Manga Artist Award of Shogakukan - making his professional
debut a year later with Beta!
He's been one of the most representative manga artists in the 80's and the 90's; he's also maybe one of the most versatile mangakas you can find nowadays, in my opinion. The first thing that jumps out about his work is the obvious variety: Pineapple Army is a mercenaries story, Yawara! a sports-related romantic comedy, Monster an action thriller, 20th Century boys is a science-fiction story... this variety is the reason why his works have attracted such a wide variety of readers through the years. I admire him so much because he's an amazing artist, able to be succesful in any genre he tries. I certainly would sell my soul in order to draw half as good as he does :)
